For Steven Janke, Colorado College was his first academic position. He had prior experience in industry designing equipment for teaching physics, but after studying probability at Berkeley, he decided that the academic life was more attractive. Janke was hired to fill Wilson Gateley's position and consequently a key requirement was to teach statistics. Coming with a rather pure mathematical background, Janke gradually developed a stronger and stronger interest in applied areas of mathematics and was a driving force in the development of thecomputer science curriculum.

Janke taught a wide range of courses including statistics, environmental science, and an interdisciplinary course with Judy Genova of the philosophy department (titled Minds, Machines, and Mammals.) He collaborated with Fred Tinsley starting in the late 1990's to produce a statistics text introduction linear models.

Janke was chair of the department from 1985 to 1988 and again from 2003-2006. During his later years he concentrated on developing a solid computer science program and designing a full major in 2005. Steven had a strong interest in teaching and was appointed as the Vernor Z. Reed Professor of Natural Sciences in 1997, and won a teaching award from the Rocky Mountain MAA section in 2008. He retired in 2016.
