Program Requirements

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program is focused on preparing teachers to be successful through academic success and developing cultural competence and sociopolitical consciousness. We focus on developing teacher identity, content integration, knowledge construction, equity pedagogy, prejudice reduction, and empowering school and learner culture.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program requires the coursework below, which can take 12 to 18 months. Students begin the program in mid-August of every year and complete all degree requirements the following May.

Prerequisites Courses

  • ED510 Introduction to K-12 Classroom Culture
  • ED510 Urban Education, Critical Multicultural Education or equivalent
  • ED510 Educational Psychology
  • ED577 Culturally Responsive Teaching and Disciplinary Literacy
  • Elementary candidates must also take ED110 Linking Literacy, Language, and Linguistics and ED310 Integrative STEM Education or equivalent

Fall Term

  • ED578 Advanced Methods: Inclusive Pedagogies in Literacy, Curriculum & Instruction
  • ED566 Data Driven Instruction for Diverse Learners in the 21st Century
  • ED553 Classrom Research Methods for Effective Teaching

Spring

  • ED579 Teacher Candidate Practicum for MATs
  • ED572 Teacher and Teaching Identities
  • ED590 Masters Research Paper
  • Successfully pass the Praxis II content exam (please see Content Testing Requirements page)

The successful candidate for the MAT program will have:

  • A bachelor's degree in the content area for which the applicant is seeking licensure (e.g., mathematics)
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0, with a 3.2 in your academic major or teaching field
  • An academic record indicating potential for successful graduate work
  • Completed the education minor at Colorado College or equivalent
  • Provided evidence of successful work in a public school classroom, either through volunteering, co-curricular activity or substitute teaching
  • Enthusiastic, problem-solvers, critical thinkers who are passionate about education and youth

Our program strongly emphasizes field experience – students are expected to enroll in the program having completed all necessary content coursework required for licensure.
