2019 Honors Convocation Celebrates Students, Faculty, Staff

Colorado College's Honors Convocation, an annual academic tradition, recognizes outstanding students across all departments and in all aspects of campus life.

This year's event, held Tuesday, May 7, in Shove Memorial Chapel, honored students, faculty, and staff with departmental awards, all-college awards, and awards from the Colorado College Student Government Association.

Among the all-college awards presented were the Outstanding Student Leader Award, presented to Maggie Mehlman '19; the Emerging Student Leader Award, presented to Cameron Mongoven '21; the Blue Key Award, presented to Professor of Biochemistry Neena Grover; and the Bill Hochman Prize, presented to Naomi Tsai '19.

The Colorado College Student Government Association also presented a series of awards, with Jacqueline Tiwonge Nkhonjera '20 receiving the CCSGA Involved Student of the year Award; the Native American Student Union receiving the Involved Student Organization of the Year Award; Senior Associate Dean of Students Rochelle Mason '83 receiving the Bob Pizzi Outstanding Advisor of the Year Memorial Award, and Assistant Professor of Race, Ethnicity and Migration Studies Dwanna McKay receiving the Lloyd E. Worner Teach of the Year Award.

Colorado College President Jill Tiefenthaler also presented numerous awards, including the Ann Rice Memorial Award to Dereka Johnabe Thomas '20; the Dreamkeeper Award, to Zunneh-bah A. Martin '19; the Mary Stearns Barkalow Award to Hailey Elizabeth Dennis '19; the J Juan Reid Award to David A. Lamis '19; the Van Diest Award to Mason Bergh '19; and the Laura Golden Award to Allysa Pauline Warling '19.

President Tiefenthaler also recognized Colorado College students receiving the Crown-Goodman Presidential Scholarship. Recipients are selected based on their academic record and contributions to the total life of the college. The scholarships are intended to reduce the loan component of the recipients' financial aid award in their senior year. This year's recipients are: Joshua Alvarado, Israel K. Ashiagbor, Wayan Aiko Buschman, Tony Calderon, Jio Chang, Eric Dallesasse, Malone Caroline DeYoung, Nan Lanier Elpers, Emma Fetterly, Darryl Elizabeth Hunter Filmore, Margot Tai-Yi Flynn, Joel Anders Frykholm, Ebba Eleonora Fernkvist Green, Magdalena Horowitz, Alma Jukic, Cam Kaplan, Olivia Dawn Martinez, Madeline Nicholson, Evva Anne Parsons, Ian Kukila I Keala Ehu Chikara Sanborn, Sam Sanson, and Kristie M. Shirley.
