The EMT Class at CC

Did you know? Colorado College has offered an Emergency Medical Technician Certification class since the 1990s! Previously under General Studies, Human Biology and Kinesiology has absorbed the EMT Class on campus and revised the formatting. Now a 1.5-unit course, our innovative format utilizes the unique nature of the Block Plan so that students learn in an immersive Block + Extended Format, unlike any other EMT Certification course in the nation. Below is more information about the course and what an EMT certification can do for you!

What is the EMT Class?

The EMT Class is listed as HK113 and HK114, and prepares students to take the National Registry of EMTs Cognitive and Psychomotor exams. After these exams, students will receive their EMT Certification, which allows them to work as an EMT-Basic in the United States.

New Format

The EMT Class has undergone a format shift to alleviate student pressure, align the EMT Class with other CC offerings, and introduce new EMT Class learning initiatives. Now students can earn up to 1.5 units for completing both HK113 (0.5 unit) and HK114 (1 unit) or just 0.5 units for completing HK113. Some notes about this formatting:

  • Students must take BOTH HK113 and HK114 to qualify to sit for the National Registry exam.
  • HK113 is the prerequisite for HK114 and must be taken before or co-currently with HK114.
  • HK114 was previously titled "Advanced EMT" but has been renamed to "EMT Basic", and HK113 has been renamed to "Foundations of EMT". Advanced EMT is a separate certificate that we do not offer on campus. This course will prepare you for the EMT-B NREMT examination.

HK113 & HK114

HK113: Foundations of EMT
HK113 will meet every Monday from 1800-2100 and will cover a basic overview of EMT concepts, skills, and testing. Students must take HK113 before or co-currently with HK114. Students who complete only HK113 will not be able to sit for the National Registry exams and will receive 0.5 units.
HK114: EMT Basic
HK114 will meet Mon-Fri from 9-12 and will address everything not already covered in HK113 for students to qualify to sit for the National Registry Cognitive and Psychomotor Exams. In HK114, students will learn how to assess and treat medical emergencies and traumatic injuries in depth. Students will also complete clinical experiences in ambulances and hospitals.

Why become an EMT?

There are several different reasons to become an EMT. Here are just a few:

Outdoorsy? An EMT certification is highly valued by Outdoor Education professional opportunities and may result in a wage increase for the use of your skills. Also, you can take better care of yourself, your friends, and other people on the trail/mountain/rock wall/river in case of an emergency.

Pre-Health? EMT certification is an amazing introduction to patient care, a refresher of anatomy and physiology, and a great way to see if health care is right for you. An EMT certification, especially combined with work experience, shows higher education institutions that you have patient care and medical experience, which is invaluable to make you a stand-out candidate. EMT-Basic is an amazing and valid career path as is, but it can also be a solid foundation to more advanced forms of medicine.

Unsure of What's Next? EMT-Basic is a certification that, with the right upkeep, can be maintained for life. EMTs are always being hired, and EMS-related work will never run out.

Want to Make a Difference? Every single day you change lives as an EMT. And often, you have the opportunity to save them. If you want to help people on what could be the worst day of their life, being an EMT is the best way to do that.

Don't Like the 9-5 Grind? Ambulance schedules are incredibly varied and often result in multiple days off, allowing time for rest and other pursuits. As an EMT, every shift will be different – it's the opposite of an office job (especially because your "office" is on wheels).

Want to Work on Campus? CCEMS, the student-run EMS corps on campus, hires regularly and allows students to work as EMTs on campus, for campus personnel. Visit their site for more information.

Already an EMT?

Continuing Education Hours – Students who are already EMTs can come into class and obtain CE hours with the consent of the Instructor. Please reach out to the Instructor to find out what dates you can attend and what you will be expected to do!

  • Did you know? College credit can count for some of your CE hours for recertification, as long as they were taken within the recertification window and are related to medical topics. Almost all HBK classes would count towards your recertification! Check out the National Registry website for more information.

Recertifying via Test or Initial Certification Testing – Colorado College's Training Program can conduct practical testing for students who do not take our course, as long as they have successfully completed requirements elsewhere and can provide proof. Please get in touch with the Instructor for more information!
