What is Classics?

Classics is the interdisciplinary study of the ancient civilizations found around the Mediterranean, with a focus on Greek and Latin literature. The cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and the classical tradition have had a profound influence on shaping contemporary institutions and values. They are also critical for helping us to understand how we structure our own minds and experiences, and to think multiculturally in historically grounded ways. Because English, as well as many other modern languages, are historically dependent upon Greek and Latin, their mastery assists in using our own language with maximum effectiveness.
