Crown Faculty Center

The Crown Faculty Center supports the central mission of the college: the education of undergraduate students through engaged, dynamic, innovative, and effective teaching. The Crown Faculty Center encourages the development and maintenance of a self-reflective teaching practice for all CC faculty. It also supports faculty scholarship and research, a central part of the liberal arts teacher-scholar model.

CROWN FACULTY SERIES

Open to all faculty and academic staff, these blockly Crown Faculty Center events are designed to support our mission of providing the finest liberal arts education to our students and to support the full lives of faculty at Colorado College.

In 2020-2021, this series partners Crown with colleagues across campus, to give special attention to our new General Education Program, CC's Anti-Racism Initiative, and how we can support not only our students but also one another during this moment in US and global health and politics.

Join Creativity & Innovation and professors Olivia Hatton (Molecular Biology), Sarah Hautzinger (Anthropology), Ryan Platt (Theatre/Dance), Karen Roybal (Southwest Studies), and Mónica Sánchez as they share ways they are integrating creative assignments into courses.

Antiracist writing workshops across the curriculum
Critique is an intricate skill that necessitates our attention, be it thesis advising, peer review, small group work, or large group workshop. Imagine if students rallied around one another, training in how to summarize their projects, articulate constructive questions, and moderate their own feedback sessions. Join CC Bronfman Creativity and Innovation Scholar-in-Residence Felicia Rose Chavez, author of The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop, for examples of anti-racist approaches to workshopping student writing across the curriculum. The Crown Faculty Center can provide a number of copies of Felicia Rose Chavez's recent book to interested teaching faculty and staff. Indicate your request in the RSVP form here.

Debt Abolition: collective action nationally and at CC

Prof. Hannah Appel (UCLA Anthropology and co-founder of the Debt Collective) joins members of CC’s Dignity + Debt working group. Prof. Appel will share her work with debt activists nationally, followed by a brief discussion of issues raised by the almost 160 members of the CC staff and faculty who completed an anonymous debt survey, and open discussion of possible future actions.

What will we take from this year?

Although most of us are looking forward to a time when we can return to the classroom, we have also learned a great deal during this pandemic year that can help us as we re-envision teaching and learning in a post-pandemic world. What techniques, collaborations, and opportunities will we take from this year that have supported us and our students? What challenges for CC and for our students have been highlighted by the intersecting racial, political, and health inequities this year? We'll collect contributions this spring and come together in May to share reflections and next steps as we strive to provide the finest antiracist liberal arts education.

EMBODIED ONLINE TEACHING SESSION 6: OBLIQUE STRATEGIES

In 1975, musician/artist Brian Eno and multimedia artist Peter Schmidt created a deck of cards called “Oblique Strategies,” which offer surprising forms of guidance for anyone engaged in a creative process. Each card presents a phrase, such as “Work at a different speed,” “Gardening, not architecture,” or “Honour thy error as a hidden intention.” In this session, we’ll experience the power and fun of the cards, and Ryan Bañagale, Ryan Platt, and Jane Hilberry will talk about how they use the cards in their teaching and their own creative work.
