Annual Report on Sponsored Research 24-25

While the changing federal landscape has certainly affected our community, by a variety of measures, the grant-seeking environment to support scholarly and creative work was strong at Colorado College during the 24-25 fiscal year.

In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, 21 faculty and two staff members submitted 24 applications for external funding in support of their research. Of these submissions, 17 or 71% were submitted in the first half of the fiscal year; not unexpectedly, proposal activity decreased in the spring in response to the changing federal landscape. Despite the slowing of submissions, 24 applications submitted during the 24-25 fiscal year represents a 16% increase over our 10-year average for annual submissions: 20.6 applications.

In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, six research awards were funded for a total of $1,526,716. Three of these awards were from the National Science Foundation, two from the New England Foundation for the Arts, and one from the Council for Innovation Promotion.

In addition to the 23 faculty and staff who submitted applications this year, in 2024-2025 an additional 16 faculty and staff met with the Director of Sponsored Research to engage with the grant-seeking process, working together to identify potential funders and discuss strategic next steps.

During the 2024-2025 fiscal year, 22 faculty and staff managed a total of 29 different research awards totaling $3.4 million in funding. Three of these research awards were in the arts and humanities, three were in the social sciences, and the remaining 23 were in the natural sciences.

Of the 107 proposals submitted in the five most recent fiscal years for which we have received all funding notifications (FY20-FY24), 47 have been funded, representing a funding rate of 44%. We anticipate a lower funding rate for proposals submitted in 2024-2025 due to the impact of the changing federal landscape.
