CC Downs Centre, Reaches NCAA Quarterfinals for First Time

The No. 16 Colorado College men's lacrosse team earned the program's first-ever appearance in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship with a dominating 19-6 victory over host Centre College on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers will face No. 3 RIT on Saturday, May 22, in Rochester, N.Y.

CC played a near-flawless first half and maintained complete control throughout the game. The Tigers built a 3-0 lead in a little more than five minutes on goals by Makay Hansen, Jack Haims and Anders Erickson, and after Centre got one back midway thought the first quarter, Colorado College ripped off seven in a row to build a commanding 10-1 cushion with 8:04 to play in the second.

The Colonels added a second goal from Scott Poplin just past the midway point of the second frame, but Elliot Nelson answered 19 seconds later to ignite a 5-0 run that included three goals from Hansen and gave CC a 15-2 lead.

"Our offense was really clicking," head coach Sean Woods said. "We have such an unselfish group, a great bunch of leaders who really don't care who scores, it's just a matter of putting the ball in the back of the net."

Hansen led the Tigers with a career-high eight points and matched his career best with six goals.

Haims, who scored three times in a little more than 13 minutes, matched his career high with four goals and five points.

Erickson produced three goals and dished out a pair of assists to continue his surge up the program's single-season record charts. The junior attackman now ranks third with 43 assists, fourth with 84 points and 15th with 41 goals.

Colorado College received another big-time effort from Elliot Nelson, who finished with two goals and three assists. The junior attackman became the 40th player in program history to record 50 or more points in a single-season.

CC's 19 goals are the most allowed by Centre this season, while the six goals scored by the Colonels are their fewest.

"I was really proud of the way our defense responded from an OK performance against Transylvania to an outstanding effort today," Woods said. "It was the best we played on defense the entire season."

Isaac Atencio and John Lawrence led Tigers' defensive effort with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

As a team, CC built a 60-23 advantage in total shots, a 34-18 edge in ground balls and won 20 of 29 faceoffs.

Winston Chodnicki won a 17 of 25 faceoffs and shared the team-high of five ground balls with Sam DiMaio.

"I'm so proud of this group, the way we've come together," Woods said. "The culture is so tight-knit, so positive. They know the difference between right and wrong, on and off the field, and they do it all together.

"Making it to the quarterfinals feels special, but we won a lacrosse game and we want to play another game. The next game is going to be awesome and hopefully we win and make it to the Final Four, but we get another week together and I cannot wait."
