What was your experience at CC like as a Political Science major?

My experience as a Political Science major at CC was a great mix of experiential, project-based learning and theoretical grounding. I took classes from across the discipline, so when I homed in on American political science, I felt I was making an informed choice. My experience completing a thesis enabled to me deeply explore the question of in the American political realm that most fascinated me—and concurrently acquire key research skills. I enjoyed all of the diverse speakers that the department brought in for lunch and learns and other talks! I miss the department coffee to this day.

Why were you interested in focusing on Political Science as your major?

I was driven to focus on Political Science as my major by a deep interest in it. Specifically, I loved learning and talking about why people think and act the way they do in the political realm—and the social realm, which often takes on surprising political undertones. While interest drew me in, I found in the major many crucial skills: an ability to think across subjects and disciplines, critical writing skills, and increased comfort public speaking to name just a few.

How are you using your major in your post-CC life?

I submitted much of the work that I did for classes like Political Psychology and Public Policymaking as part of my resume applying to policy-focused jobs in Denver. Working in advocacy, much of what I do is leverage storytelling to influence change. That takes perception of what kinds of information and narratives change minds, how to communicate data effectively, and which levers are most effective to elicit the outcomes you desire. All of these concepts were covered by my political science education, and continue to be informed by my knowledge from Colorado College!
