Race and Ethnicity in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Captain Ahab’s Pequod is manned by an assemblage of what C.L.R. James calls, in his text of the same title, Mariners, Renegades and Castaways in pursuit of the white whale. Students will read the novel closely and focus on the implications of race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality and the novel’s significance in literary and political theory. Meets the Critical Perspectives: Social Inequality requirement. (Not offered 2025-26).

Prerequisite: English 250, Race, Ethnicity, & Migration 185 Either, Race, Ethnicity, & Migration 212, or consent of instructor.
