The European Union currently faces a profoundly uncertain future. In an effort to understand how the situation got to this point, this course will survey the history of the EU from its predecessor institutions to current challenges. We will devote particular attention to discussing the implications of EU membership for managing conflicts, facilitating popular conceptualizations of citizenship, and creating shared intercultural bonds across national borders.
