Analyzes the relationship between law, society and culture in China during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1910) dynasties. Considers the classical foundations of Chinese jurisprudence, then examines late imperial culture using legal codes, case records, popular fiction and contemporary historical scholarship to explore the relationship between state and society in this period, in particular the relationship between social hierarchies and configurations of power.
