This course provides an immersive exploration into the foundational principles of geophysical methods used to study the near-surface Earth. This hands-on course emphasizes experiential learning, guiding students through the process of collecting, processing, and interpreting geophysical data. Through practical fieldwork and analytical exercises, students will learn how geophysics can be utilized to understand and solve numerous environmental challenges.

The class will focus on solid-state rock flow and deformation from the atomic to lithospheric plate scale. The aims of the course are to build on fundamental concepts of rock mechanics to develop a cohesive understanding of crystal-plastic and cataclastic flow in fault zones. We will balance theory, lab exercises, microscopy, and field work to recognize deformation mechanisms active at conditions spanning the lower crust to near surface. GY315 is recommended, but the course is designed to be accessible to geology majors who have taken GY211, GY212, or GY310. There will be an overnight field component that may involve backpacking or backcountry camping.

This course explores the legacy of glaciation on landscapes and humans through field investigation of recently glaciated landscapes, use of an AI model to explore long-term glacial fluctuations, and discussion of glacial impacts on water resources, natural hazards, and human migration.
