Art of the Dutch Republic

The Golden Age of Holland was a time of economic, cultural, and political growth. Artists developed innovative styles and visual modes that play upon, subvert and enhance our understanding of seeing, living, and thinking in the early modern era. The class examines the primary genres of Dutch art and major artists such as Rembrandt and Vermeer while focusing on questions of interpretation, method, and context. Addresses the production, marketing, ownership, iconography, and remarkable visual power of Dutch art. Meets the Writing in the Discipline requirement. (Not offered 2021-22).
